About the Founder
Mohammed Umar
Founder, FirstPage Foundation
It started with twin girls. Mohammed Umar had spent almost ten years working in Nigeria's non-profit space by the time he met the girls, bright, determined girls on the edge of walking away from school for good, not because they lacked the ability or the will, but because their parents simply could not raise the money for their final-year exam fees. They had come this far. Ten, eleven, twelve years of showing up, of learning, of hoping, and it was about to end over a sum of money that, to many, would seem almost nothing.
That encounter stayed with him. Over the years, Mohammed had sat with people across dozens of underserved communities, in classrooms, in mentorship sessions, in quiet conversations on the margins of community programs, and he had seen the same story repeat itself in different forms. Children with sharp minds and quiet resilience, held back not by what they lacked in talent, but by what they lacked in access. Parents doing everything right and still falling short, not from neglect, but from circumstances stacked against them. And all the while, the number of out-of-school children kept climbing, not because the problem was unsolvable, but because too few people were paying attention.
For Mohammed, those girls' stories became impossible to walk past. If these children could come so close to losing their future over a fee, how many others were quietly disappearing from classrooms across the country, unseen and unrecorded? He thought about the doctors, engineers, teachers, and leaders the world might never know, not because they weren't capable, but because no one had opened the door at the right moment.
That thought became a decision, and that decision became FirstPage Foundation, a place built on a simple belief: that every child deserves to finish the story they started, and that talent should never go unseen simply because opportunity wasn't shared equally. FirstPage Foundation exists to be that open door, one child, one fee, one chance at a time.
"Every child we've worked with has taught us the same thing — talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn't. FirstPage Foundation exists to close that gap, one classroom and one competition at a time."
